About Úbeda
Úbeda sits on the southern ridge of the Loma de Úbeda between the Guadalquivir and the Guadalimar, in the province of Jaén. With neighbouring Baeza it was given a series of Renaissance palaces and churches in the early 16th century, and in 2003 UNESCO declared the historic centres of both towns a World Heritage Site. The province around them is the largest producer of olive oil in the world, with more than 66 million olive trees producing around 45% of all Spanish olive oil, and it is known as the World Capital of Olive Oil. The 13th-century Water Synagogue, uncovered in 2007, even kept a cellar for olive oil and kosher wine.
