Alhambra

The Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex above Granada, and the only well-preserved palace to survive from the medieval Islamic world. Building began in 1238 under Muhammad I Ibn al-Ahmar, first Nasrid emir and founder of the Emirate of Granada, the last Muslim state of al-Andalus, on the Sabika hill. It also holds notable Spanish Renaissance work, added after the conquest, so the two traditions stand side by side. It is among the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture anywhere. Entry is timed and capped, and tickets go long in advance.
