Trollstigen

Eleven hairpin bends climbing a mountainside at a gradient of ten per cent, opened by King Haakon VII on 31 July 1936 after eight years of building. The road is narrow enough that anything over 12.4 metres long is banned outright, and about 2,500 vehicles a day come through at the height of summer. At the plateau, 700 metres up, there is a car park and a set of viewing balconies looking back down the bends and across at Stigfossen, which drops 320 metres beside the road. The pass tops out near 850 metres and closes from late autumn until roughly mid-May.
