Tournai

Tournai stands on the Scheldt, 89 kilometres by road south-west of Brussels, and forms part of the Lille–Kortrijk–Tournai Eurometropolis. About 68,518 people live in the municipality. It is one of the oldest cities in Belgium and was the first capital of the Frankish kingdom, which gives it a claim on the country’s cultural history that few places can match. The cathedral dominates everything, and the river runs straight through the middle of the old town. It sits close to the French border, inside the Eurometropolis it shares with Lille and Kortrijk.
