St Davids

The smallest city in the United Kingdom by population, 1,751 people in the wider community in 2021, and the resting place of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, for whom it is named. City status came in the twelfth century, was lost in 1886, and was restored in 1994 at the request of Queen Elizabeth II. The Welsh name Tyddewi means David’s house. After the Romans withdrew, the area was known in ecclesiastical Latin as Menevia and in Welsh as Mynyw, and some medieval texts put a cell or monastery here founded by Saint Patrick around 470.
