St Andrews

A coastal town on the east of Fife that grew west of its cathedral and became the ecclesiastical capital of Scotland, holding that position until the Reformation; the cathedral was the largest in the country and now stands in ruins. It is also known globally as the home of golf, because of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club founded in 1754, which until 2004 made the rules of the game everywhere except the United States and Mexico. The Old Course, bought by the town in 1894, is the most frequent venue for the Open. The university is the oldest in Scotland.
