Siena

Siena is a city in Tuscany and capital of its province, with 53,180 people, the twelfth largest in the region. It was historically a commercial and banking centre, and was a major one until the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, which is when most of what visitors come for was built. The city is arranged around the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, still the site of the Palio horse race, and the contrade districts that run it remain a live part of the social order rather than a pageant.
