Rock of Cashel

The traditional seat of the kings of Munster from as early as the fourth century, where the Eóganachta built a fortress in the fifth and held supremacy for hundreds of years. Brian Boru was crowned here in 977 and made Cashel his capital; in 1101 Muirchertach Ua Briain gave the fortress on the rock to the Church. The complex that stands now is one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture anywhere in Europe. Local legend says the rock landed here when St Patrick banished Satan from a cave in the Devil’s Bit, twenty miles north.
