Orvieto

Orvieto is a city and comune in the Province of Terni in south-western Umbria, sitting on the flat summit of a large butte of volcanic tuff. The city rises above almost vertical faces of that tuff, finished off by defensive walls built from the same stone, so the town and the rock it stands on are visually one thing. Beneath it, the same soft stone has been tunnelled for wells, cellars and dovecotes since Etruscan times, and a good part of the visit happens underground.
