Nikkō

A city in Tochigi Prefecture about 140 kilometres north of Tokyo, covering 1,449.83 square kilometres, the third-largest city by area in Japan, with elevations running from 200 to 2,000 metres. It holds the mausoleum of the shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Nikkō Tōshō-gū shrine and that of his grandson Tokugawa Iemitsu, along with the Futarasan shrine, which dates to the year 767. There are many onsen in the area. The saying goes: never say kekkō until you have seen Nikkō, kekkō meaning splendid, magnificent, or satisfied.
