Murten

A bilingual town on the southern shore of its lake, between Neuchâtel and Fribourg, and one of the few municipalities with a German-speaking majority, about seventy-five per cent, in a predominantly French-speaking canton. It is the capital of the See/Lac district. The oldest archaeological traces in the area are Mesolithic, from between 8200 and 5500 BC, mostly small flint pieces. A long series of mergers has enlarged the municipality since 1975, most recently in 2022.
