About Mount Rushmore

Four presidents’ heads, each sixty feet tall, carved into the granite of a Black Hills mountain the Lakota call Tȟuŋkášila Šákpe Pahá, the Six Grandfathers. Gutzon Borglum called it the Shrine of Democracy and oversaw the work from 1927 to 1941 with his son Lincoln. Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln were chosen to stand for the nation’s foundation, expansion, development and preservation. More than two million people a year come to the 1,278-acre memorial park.
