Custer State Park

South Dakota’s first and largest state park, over 71,000 acres of rolling prairie grassland and rugged mountain in the Black Hills, named after Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. A herd of 1,400 bison lives here, along with elk, coyotes, bobcats, mule and white-tailed deer, mountain goats, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, river otters, pronghorn, cougars and feral burros. The Needles Highway and the wildlife loop are the scenic drives; the South Dakota Centennial Trail runs through. Wind Cave, Mount Rushmore and Jewel Cave are all close by.
