Mount Pico

Mount Pico is a dormant stratovolcano on Pico Island in the mid-Atlantic Azores, and at 2,351 metres the highest mountain in Portugal, more than twice the elevation of any other peak in the archipelago, and one of the highest mountains in the Atlantic. It has been a designated nature reserve since 1972. The climb is a real one: steep, loose underfoot and weather-exposed, done with a permit and usually started before dawn to be on the cone at sunrise above the cloud.
