Mount Fuji

An active stratovolcano on Honshu with a summit at 3,776 metres: the highest mountain in Japan and the seventh-highest peak of any island on Earth. It last erupted between 1707 and 1708. It stands about 100 kilometres southwest of Tokyo and is visible from the city on clear days, its cone exceptionally symmetrical and under snow for about five months of the year. It is one of Japan’s Three Holy Mountains alongside Mount Tate and Mount Haku, and was added to the World Heritage List as a cultural site on 22 June 2013, inscribed, UNESCO said, for inspiring artists and poets.
