Lascaux

Lascaux is a network of caves near Montignac in the Dordogne, holding over six hundred parietal wall paintings across its interior walls and ceilings. The images are overwhelmingly of large animals (the local fauna of the Upper Paleolithic, matching what the fossil record shows was there) and are the combined work of many hands over a long period. The original cave has been closed to protect the paintings, and what visitors see is a facsimile, which sounds like a compromise until you are standing in it. The Vézère valley around it holds many more sites.
