Kanazawa

The capital of Ishikawa Prefecture, with 466,029 residents across 468.64 square kilometres. The name means marsh of gold, and is said to come from the peasant Imohori Togoro, Togoro the Potato-Digger, who was digging for potatoes when flakes of gold washed up; the well in the grounds of Kenroku-en is called Kinjo Reitaku in acknowledgement, and there is a shrine to Togoro in the Yamashina district. The area was originally known as Ishiura, a name kept by the Ishiura Shrine near the garden, and the country around it was part of ancient Kaga Province.
