Harz National Park

Harz National Park is a protected area across Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, covering parts of the western Harz range from Herzberg and Bad Lauterberg at the southern edge to Bad Harzburg and Ilsenburg on the northern slopes. Ninety-five per cent of it is forest, mainly spruce and beech, with bogs, granite outcrops and streams between. It is part of the Natura 2000 network. The Brocken at its centre stood in the border zone until 1990, which is why the summit railway and the mountain both feel like recent recoveries.
