Göta Canal

The Göta Canal was built in the early nineteenth century and runs 190 kilometres, of which 87 were dug or blasted, between 7 and 14 metres wide and about 3 metres at its deepest. Traffic is limited to five knots. It forms part of a 390-kilometre waterway linking a chain of lakes and rivers across the country. At that speed the canal is slower than the towpath beside it, which is why most people now see it by bicycle rather than by boat.
