Glen Coe

A glen of glacial origin cut through volcanic rock, regarded as the home of Scottish mountaineering. Scottish Natural Heritage singled out its soaring dramatic splendour and the suddenness of the change between high mountain pass and lightly wooded strath, and called the drive through on the A82 one of the classic Highland journeys. On 13 February 1692, after the Jacobite uprising of 1689, thirty-eight men of Clan MacDonald of Glencoe were killed by government troops billeted with them, on the grounds that they had been slow to pledge allegiance to William and Mary.
