Glasgow

Scotland’s largest city, on the Clyde, grown from a small rural settlement below the cathedral into the country’s biggest seaport and the tenth largest by tonnage in Britain. The medieval bishopric became an episcopal and then a royal burgh, the university was founded in the fifteenth century, and by the eighteenth the city was a major centre of the Scottish Enlightenment. Through the Victorian and Edwardian years it was widely called the second city of the British Empire. Over a million people live in Greater Glasgow and more than 1,800,000 in the wider city region, about a third of Scotland.
