Geneva

Where the Rhône leaves its lake, and a global centre for diplomacy, which is why it is called the peace capital. It hosts more international organisations than any other city, among them many United Nations agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross; the Geneva Conventions were signed here, and the League of Nations sat here after the First World War. It shares with New York, Bonn, Basel and Strasbourg the odd distinction of headquartering a critical international body without being a national capital.
