Fjaðrárgljúfur

Up to a hundred metres deep and about two kilometres long, with steep walls and water winding along the floor, the Fjaðrá cutting down through rock and palagonite over roughly two million years, since the cold periods of the Ice Age. A waterfall comes down the western side, seen from a platform at the end of a mile’s walk up the eastern rim. In May 2019 the authorities closed the canyon outright: it had appeared in a Justin Bieber music video and the arriving crowds were about to damage the ground they had come to see.
