Dartmoor

The largest area of granite in Britain (about 625 square kilometres at the surface, most of it under peat) intruded as a pluton some 309 million years ago and now weathered into the moorland capped by tors that gives the place its outline. High Willhays is the top at 621 metres. It has been a national park since 1951, covering 954 square kilometres, and the whole area is thick with antiquities. Parts have been military firing ranges for over 200 years, and the public holds extensive access rights across the moor, the ranges included when they are not in use.
