Acadia National Park

About half of Mount Desert Island, part of Isle au Haut, the tip of the Schoodic Peninsula and portions of sixteen smaller outlying islands, 49,075 acres in all. Cadillac Mountain here is the tallest on the Atlantic coast of the United States, standing among exposed granite domes, glacial erratics, U-shaped valleys and cobble beaches. Woven through the landscape is the carriage road system that John D. Rockefeller Jr. financed. The Wabanaki have a history here going back more than 10,000 years; fur traders and European explorers came in the seventeenth century, and summer visitors in the nineteenth.
