Laponia

Laponia is a large mountainous wilderness in the province of Lapland in northern Sweden, spanning Gällivare, Arjeplog and Jokkmokk municipalities, its name from the Latin for Lapland. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, though the bulk of it had been protected since the early twentieth century. It is listed for both nature and culture: the Sami have herded reindeer across this ground for thousands of years and still do, and the listing recognises that as part of the landscape rather than apart from it.
