Dolomites

The Dolomites (Monti Pallidi, the Pale Mountains) are a range in north-eastern Italy forming part of the Southern Limestone Alps, running from the Adige in the west to the Piave valley at Pieve di Cadore in the east, bounded north and south by the Puster Valley and the Valsugana. The rock is what makes them: pale dolomitic limestone that turns rose and then red at sunset. Rifugi rather than hotels serve the high routes, and the via ferrata network here is the densest anywhere.
