Lagos

Lagos stands at the mouth of the Bensafrim river on the Atlantic, in the Barlavento region of the Algarve. The municipality had 33,494 people at the March 2021 census across 212.99 square kilometres, though visiting tourists and seasonal residents swell that considerably in summer. Most of the population lives along the coast. The old walled town sits behind a working harbour, and the cliffs immediately west, sandstone stacks and sea caves at Ponta da Piedade, are what fills the boats leaving the marina each morning.
