Sierra Nevada National Park

Sierra Nevada National Park covers 85,883 hectares across the provinces of Granada and Almería, declared a national park on 14 January 1999. It runs from the Alpujarra to El Marquesado and the Lecrín Valley, and was the largest national park in Spain until the Cabrera Archipelago was expanded in 2019. This is genuine high mountain: snow lies late, the upper routes are a summer undertaking, and the villages of the Alpujarra on the southern slope keep a walking culture of their own. The rivers off its western and southern faces run down to the Mediterranean, and the contrast between range and coast is part of the appeal.
