De Biesbosch National Park

De Biesbosch is one of the largest national parks in the Netherlands and one of the last extensive freshwater tidal wetlands left in north-western Europe. The name means something like ‘forest of sedges’, and the park is a maze of rivers, creeks and low islands spread across North Brabant and South Holland, grown over with willow flood forest and broken by wet grassland and beds of reed. The tide still reaches here, which is what makes it rare. It is a wetland of real consequence for waterfowl, and migrating geese arrive in great numbers. Most of it is best seen from the water.
