About Eberbach Abbey

Eberbach Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery in Eltville in the Rheingau, and for its Romanesque and early Gothic buildings one of the most significant heritage sites in Hesse. It grew rich on vineyards and wine, and the church’s control of early Rheingau winemaking was exercised from here. Around 1525 it is said to have held a wine barrel of between 50,000 and 100,000 litres, used heavily by rebels in the German Peasants’ War. Interior scenes of The Name of the Rose were filmed here, and the abbey is a main venue of the Rheingau Musik Festival. Wine is still made under the Stiftung Kloster Eberbach.
