About Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

A park on the island of Hawaii encompassing two active volcanoes: Kilauea, one of the world’s most active, and Mauna Loa, the world’s largest shield volcano. It gives scientists insight into the development of the Hawaiian Islands and access for studies of volcanism, and gives visitors dramatic volcanic landscapes, glimpses of rare flora and fauna, and a view into the traditional Hawaiian culture connected to those landscapes. For the Kanaka Maoli, the indigenous people of the park, volcanic eruptions are sacred. It was established on 1 August 1916 as Hawaii National Park, later split into this park and Haleakala, and was designated an International Biosphere Reserve.
