Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

Of the 400,000 square miles of tallgrass prairie that once covered North America, less than 5 per cent remains, most of it in the Flint Hills of Kansas, and this preserve protects a nationally significant piece of it. The Park Service and The Nature Conservancy work the ground together, telling the ranching legacy and American Indian history alongside the ecosystem itself. A bison herd has lived here since 2009. Over forty miles of maintained trail cross the prairie, with narrated bus tours in summer.
