Rigi

A massif almost entirely ringed by water (Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz) with its main summit, Rigi Kulm, at 1,797 metres and a hotel on top that has stood since 1816. Europe’s oldest mountain railways serve the Kulm and the resort of Rigi Kaltbad. The name comes from Old High German for a horizontal stratification or band, after the rock ledges and grass strips that run round the mountain from west to east; it is first recorded in 1350 as Riginun. Albrecht von Bonstetten read it instead as Regina montium, queen of mountains.
