Newgrange

A passage tomb built around 3100 BC, older than Stonehenge and older than the Egyptian pyramids, set on a rise above the Boyne. A circular mound holds a stone passage and cruciform chamber where burnt and unburnt human bone was found along with possible grave goods. The façade is mostly white quartz cobble, ringed by engraved kerbstones, and much of the larger stone carries megalithic art; some of the material came from as far as the Mournes and the Wicklow Mountains. On the winter solstice the rising sun enters a roofbox above the door and floods the chamber.
