Savannah

Established on the Savannah River in 1733, the oldest city in Georgia, capital of the colonial province and later the first state capital. It was a strategic port in both the Revolution and the Civil War, and remains an important Atlantic seaport and industrial centre. Millions of visitors come each year for the cobblestone streets, the parks and the historic buildings, among them the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, who founded the Girl Scouts, and the Georgia Historical Society, the oldest continually operating one in the country.
