Redwood National and State Parks

A complex of one national park and three California state parks along the coast of northern California – Redwood National Park together with Del Norte Coast Redwoods, Jedediah Smith Redwoods and Prairie Creek Redwoods. Their combined 139,000 acres, in Del Norte and Humboldt counties, preserve 45 percent of all the remaining old-growth coast redwood forest. The tree they protect, Sequoia sempervirens, is the tallest and among the oldest and most massive species on Earth, and thrives in this humid temperate rainforest. The parks also preserve 37 miles of coastline, grassland prairie, waterways and threatened animal species. The region is highly seismically active and prone to tsunamis.
