Marvão

Marvão, formally the Very Noble and Ever Loyal Town of Marvão, is a municipality in the Portalegre district with 2,972 people as of 2020 across 154.9 square kilometres, and losing roughly one inhabitant a week. Its name derives from an eighth-century Muwallad rebel. The town is perched on a quartzite crag of the Serra de São Mamede, walled and entered through a gate, with the Spanish frontier visible from the ramparts. It is very small, very high and very quiet, and worth staying the night for.
