Kilpisjärvi

A village of about 114 people in Finland’s northwestern arm, strung along one road (the Arm Road, also the Four Winds’ Road) with the highest point of the Finnish road network, 565.8 metres, close by. Saana fell stands over it, and 2.5 kilometres northwest of the lake’s end is the monument marking the point where Finland, Sweden and Norway meet. Sweden is visible across the water; Norway is under ten kilometres by road. In winter about four times as many Norwegians stay here as there are permanent residents, drawn by cheaper prices and freer snowmobiling.
