Kalmar Castle

Kalmar Castle stands in the city of Kalmar in Småland. A round defensive tower was built on the Kalmarsund in the twelfth century with a harbour beside it, and at the end of the thirteenth King Magnus Ladulås had a new fortress raised around it, a curtain wall, round corner towers and two square gatehouses. It was here that the Kalmar Union joining Denmark, Norway and Sweden was agreed in 1397, which makes it one of the more consequential buildings in Scandinavia.
