About Greve in Chianti
Greve in Chianti sits in the Val di Greve, about 31 kilometres south of Florence, and is the principal town of the Chianti wine district that stretches south towards Siena. It was plain Greve until 1972, when it added Chianti to its name after the district was enlarged in 1932. Its triangular main piazza has held a market more or less continuously for centuries. Around it the hills grow the Sangiovese that goes into Chianti, olives for Tuscan extra virgin oil, and black and white truffles are hunted here. Wild boar is a staple of local menus. Come for a slow day of cellar doors and a long lunch on the square.
