About Cigales
Cigales is a municipality in the province of Valladolid that gives its name to the Cigales DOP, a wine area along both banks of the River Pisuerga north of Valladolid, created in 1991. The denomination takes in Cigales itself along with places such as Dueñas, Fuensaldaña, Mucientes and Trigueros del Valle, at around 750 m above sea level. Romans introduced vines here, and the number of vineyards grew in the Middle Ages under the influence of the monasteries. Summers are long and hot, with spring frosts a real risk to the harvest. It is an easy half day from Valladolid.
