Berlengas

The Berlengas are a small Atlantic archipelago 10 to 17 kilometres off the coast at Peniche, in the Oeste region, known to British mariners historically as the Burlings. Berlenga Grande is the only island large enough to have been inhabited, though nobody lives permanently in the archipelago now; the rest fall into two groups of islets, the Estelas and the Farilhões. Access is by boat in season and capped by permit, which is what has kept the granite, the seabird colonies and the water around them in the state they are in.
