Læsø

The largest island in the Kattegat, nineteen kilometres off the northeast coast of Jutland, and the least populous municipality in Denmark with 1,683 people across 114 square kilometres. Its name comes from Old Norse Hlésey, the island of Hlér, another name for Ægir, the jötunn who personifies the sea and whose nine daughters are the waves. It turns up repeatedly in Old Norse sources: in Hárbarðsljóð, Thor describes being attacked here by berserk women who had bewitched every man on the island, and it appears in several other poems and sagas besides.
