Himmelbjerget

At 147 metres this was thought to be the highest point in Denmark until 1847, and it is now only the eighth, but height was never quite the point. The slope is: the ground falls 121 metres from the summit to Julsø below, which by Danish standards is dramatic. People have gathered here for over two hundred years, and the 25-metre brick tower on top was raised in 1875 to honour Frederik VII for granting the constitution of 1849 that ended absolute monarchy. Monuments nearby include one to women’s suffrage in 1915. The steamship Hjejlen still brings visitors from Silkeborg.
