Vega Archipelago

About 6,500 islands, islets and skerries off the Helgeland coast, with the island of Vega itself the largest at 163 square kilometres and 1,208 people living across the whole municipality. The sea is the entire basis of the place, enough that the coat of arms granted in 1987 is simply a boat bailer on a red field, the one tool nobody could do without. Bremstein Lighthouse stands out to the southwest. The name comes from veig, meaning liquid, for the lakes and marshes of the main island.
