Røros

They call it Bergstaden, the mountain town, and the copper under it is the reason anything is here at all: Røros is one of only two places in Norway historically designated a mining town, the other being the silver town of Kongsberg. Roughly eighty historic wooden houses stand around courtyards, many still wearing dark pitch-log facades that give the streets a medieval look at any hour. People live and work in these seventeenth- and eighteenth-century buildings rather than merely showing them, which is much of why UNESCO listed the town in 1980. It sits high and cold in Trøndelag.
