High Coast

The High Coast, Höga Kusten, is a stretch of the Swedish coast on the Gulf of Bothnia in Ångermanland, centred on the municipalities of Kramfors, Härnösand and Örnsköldsvik. It is significant for research into post-glacial rebound and eustasy, the rise of land as the ice covering it melts, a phenomenon first recognised and studied here. The land is still rising, so the coastline is measurably younger than the map, and the hills drop into the sea more steeply than anywhere else in the country.
