Vadstena

Vadstena is the seat of Vadstena Municipality in Östergötland County, with 5,802 inhabitants in 2023, and between 1974 and 1979 was administered as part of Motala Municipality. Despite its size it is still referred to as a city, having received its privileges in 1400. Vadstena Castle is among the best-preserved in Sweden from the era of Gustav Vasa, and it was here that St Birgitta founded the first monastery of her Bridgettine Order, a very small place carrying two very large pieces of Swedish history.
