Mount Etna

Mount Etna is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, in the Metropolitan City of Catania between Messina and Catania, standing above the convergent margin between the African and Eurasian plates. It is one of the tallest active volcanoes in Europe and the highest peak in Italy south of the Alps, at 3,403 metres as of September 2024, a figure that changes, because the mountain does. Vineyards grow on the lower slopes in black volcanic soil; the upper cone is ash and closed at short notice.
